Why shop Sustainably?    
We are currently facing a global fisheries crisis. Over time, increased demand for fish has led to a change from subsistence fishing to large scale harvesting, often involving the use of destructive fishing techniques. With over 75% of all fisheries either fully fished or overfished, the industry is now suffering widespread commercial extinctions. As a result of unsustainable fishing practices, habitats have been destroyed, ecosystems are imbalanced and fish are being harvested on such a large scale that fish are being caught faster than they can reproduce and populations are unable to recover. Yet, despite the global decline in fish populations, the demand for fish and seafood products is still rapidly increasing and the techniques designed to capture them are fast advancing.      

At Aquatica we are primarily concerned about the environment and the increasingly devastating impact that overfishing and destructive fishing techniques is having on the marine ecosystems of Sabah. In order to try and improve this situation we have developed a basic Seafood guide, highlighting the sustainably caught fish, allowing you to make wise and informed decisions about the seafood you consume. Our hope is that Sabah's fishing industry can move towards sustainability and our fish populations and ecosystems can be preserved for the pleasure of future generations.
What does 'sustainable' mean?    

Sustainable fishing involves fishing and farming practices which can exist over the long term without impacting species' survival or the health of the ecosystems which surround them.

By ensuring that all seafood you buy was caught or farmed sustainably, you can avoid causing any direct harmful impacts to the environment whilst supporting local industry and encouraging ecologically friendly fishing practices.
