Body lateral compressed, oval-shaped. Color mostly dark black. Head and dorsal bunched. Snout short, blunt. Dorsal fin tapers from gill cover to caudal peduncle. Caudal fin truncate.

Current Situation:
Tilapia farming serves a useful purpose in the world: producing protein, especially in developing countries. That’s because tilapia eat less protein while they’re growing than they later provide to people who eat them.

Native to North Africa, tilapia are hardy, freshwater fish that tolerate a wide range of water conditions. This means they’re easy to farm, but it also means they can easily invade many habitats and threaten native fish there.

Conservation Status: Good
Local Name: Tilapia
